Maillol and drawing
Drawing was key to Maillol's work, as he distilled in it the process of invention, memory and the study of his model. Maillol was a prolific draughtsman and would never go anywhere without his sketchpads, in which he accumulated studies, sketches and outlines.
The idea for a sculpture almost always emerged from his imagination, since he never contemplated slavishly copying from nature, in other words, from a model. Gifted with an exceptional visual memory, Maillol executed each sculpture from a considerable number of drawings.
